Sustainability

What are sustainable jeans?

Sustainable jeans utilize ethical and sustainable practices when developing and manufacturing the products. The goal of sustainable denim is to cut the carbon footprint and water use that it takes to make a typical pair of jeans. Companies are able to do this with transparent supply chains and only using sustainable, organic, plant-based, and certified materials through a completely environmentally-friendly and cruelty-free process. After the life of these sustainable jeans, they are capable of being upcycled back into new materials. All processes should be transparent and based on scientific data such as LCAs. The EMF Jeans Redesign project helps build out guidelines that ensure jeans can be deemed sustainable.

What is the Jeans Redesign project?

The Jeans Redesign project is an effort started by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. It is a listed set of guidelines that when followed, ensure that the denim being produced is indeed sustainable. The guidelines establish the minimum requirements for the durability, material health, recyclability, and traceability of denim jeans, as set out with over 80 denim experts. By employing the principles of a circular economy, Jeans Redesign ensures positive impacts for the environment, society, and the health of those people working in its industry.

How do I know what to look for when shopping sustainably?

The first step is to check if the company has a sustainability report on their website as well as certifications that the company might hold. The second step is to check the composition of the materials used to make the garment. For instance, over 70% of clothes made today are made from plastic fibers such as polyester, polyamide, and acrylic to name a few. Boyish uses 99.7% plant-based materials, we only use a small amount of polyurethane elastane stretch material in a small assortment of our jeans. We are moving towards replacing this material with natural rubber that is completely plant-based and plastic free.

How is Boyish sustainable?

Being sustainable is not accomplished by only doing one thing. Not only is Boyish 100% carbon neutral and completely Oeko-Tex certified, but Boyish also focuses on several different factors of sustainability. These factors include: ethical practices including our labor conditions and auditing our entire supply chain through organizations like Sedex and Intertek, strict fiber guidelines based on scientific LCA reports by using a mixture of recycled, organic, and plant-based materials such as OCS certified organic cotton, TENCEL™ Lyocell, and REFIBRA™ Technology, having a completely transparent supply chain certified by Retraced, utilizing advanced technology and machinery in our laundry, using eco-friendly certified chemicals including natural indigo dye, and all of our claims are third-party certified and approved so you can feel at ease knowing that we are not greenwashing. Materials

What is REFIBRA™?

REFIBRA™ Lyocell uses the same closed-loop manufacturing process as TENCEL™ Lyocell, but incorporates a significant amount of fabric scraps to create new virgin TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers. Fabric scraps are generally pre-consumer waste that ends up on the cutting floor that would otherwise be thrown away. About 15% of every company's fabric that is supposed to be for clothing ends up as fabric waste. Lenzing is working to close the loop and create a more circular economy with REFIBRA™. Read more about REFIBRA™ in our Fiber Guidelines.

What is TENCEL™?

TENCEL™ Lyocell is one of the most sustainable options available right now. It’s made of sustainable wood pulp from eucalyptus trees that are FSC certified, they’re not sourced from ancient and endangered forests. Compared to conventional cotton, TENCEL™ uses just a fifth of the land and a tenth of the water to produce, thanks to its closed-loop manufacturing process. Learn more about TENCEL™ in our Fiber Guidelines.

Why is recycled cotton better for the environment?

Recycled cotton requires no additional textile waste and very little resources compared to conventional and organic cotton. This material also requires no water to make jeans. According to the Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s Higg Index, recycled cotton is the most sustainable cotton fiber which is the reason why you'll often see this fiber included in many of Boyish jeans compositions as Boyish recycles their own cutting waste back into their fabrics.

Sizing

How do I choose a size for my jeans?

We use MySizeID app on our website to help you find the perfect size in our jeans. Just click on the style you want and watch the MySizeID icon pop up in the bottom right corner of your browser. We also have a size guide for our knits and jackets here.

Should I size up when buying a rigid jean?

The regular, stretchy denim that you are often used to is made with plastic fibers, and as you know plastic is bad for Mama Earth. Our denim cuts out those plastics to make our rigid denim. Since those plastic fibers aren’t present in our rigid jeans, you won’t get the stretch you’re used to. This fit is very structured and therefore does not stretch. If you want a more form fitting jean then stick with your usual size, but if you want your rigid denim to give a little, we recommend sizing up. Be sure to use our MySizeID app on our website!

I bought two jeans in the same size and they do not fit the same. Is this correct or did I receive an incorrect product?

We apologize for this inconsistency. We are still a very new brand and working with new sustainable factories worldwide sometimes leads to small manufacture issues like this. The issue with denim is that the products are sewn and then garment washed afterward which creates something the industry calls "shrinkage". This can be hard to control when producing new styles for the first production run. It’s a learning curve that has since been fixed in our recent production. We are constantly improving our designs, fits, and sizes. Please bear with us as we are consistently evolving our products to make them the best as possible for our customers.

Care

How do I wash and care for my jeans?

When washing your jeans, hand washing uses the least amount of water; however, you can also machine wash cold inside out with like colors then hang them to dry. Do not tumble dry, bleach, or dry clean your Boyish jeans. If ironing, Iron inside out.

My jeans are too long, how can I hem them to the right length?

We recommend going to your local tailor or dry cleaning service that has tailoring services to hem your jeans. If possible, we recommend doing an original hem that cuts off your hem and reattaches it. Here is a link to an online hemming service.
